Finnish-Moroccan research collaboration on innovative teacher training – Coming in March 2026

FinlandWay® pedagogy and teacher training are rooted in research and scientific best practises on early childhood education and young children’s learning and development. We’re proud to announce our upcoming publication, a peer reviewed research article in the book Innovative Teacher Training: Practical Frameworks for Future Education, which offers insights in our in-service teacher training programme.

The article, co-authored by FinlandWay® experts Laura Ketonen (Manager of Programme Design and Training at FinlandWay®),  Jonna Kangas (FinlandWay® Co-founder, PhD and Senior University Lecturer of Early Childhood Education at University of Helsinki), and Siham Shriri (FinlandWay® curriculum coordinator at Al Amana FinlandWay® school in Tanger, Morocco) focuses on one of the FinlandWay® “3 P’s” method, participatory pedagogy, in the context of one of our teacher training modules.

Supporting teachers to implement participatory pedagogy in Morocco

FinlandWay® has multiple units in Morocco in Marrakech, Casablanca, and Tanger. Our partner school Al Amana FinlandWay® in Tanger follows the FinlandWay® curriculum with their preschool classes and the teachers take part in the FinlandWay® teacher training. In the article, we have dived into their training practices and experiences, led by Siham Shriri, who also conducted the teacher interviews for the research. “This experience was rich and enjoyable, as I discovered many practices that encourage active participation and collaboration among children. I believe that participatory pedagogy is the optimal solution to transform education into a fun and useful experience for children. Through this approach, children can grow and develop in the best possible way and become able to face future challenges. As one teacher said, participatory pedagogy allows children to express themselves and encourages them to work together and respect each other.” Shriri explains. She is convinced that training Moroccan teachers in participatory pedagogy is the best investment in Morocco’s future: “By empowering teachers to support participation, we will help develop children’s skills to live in the 21st century. Participatory pedagogy also helps build a new generation of leaders, innovators, and critical thinkers, who will be able to achieve success and contribute to the development of society.”

“The process of writing this article beautifully highlights the collaborative nature of the partnerships with our schools. The ideas of collaboration, peer-learning and shared meaning-making, which we are teaching to children through our programme, are also shaping our own work as ECE professionals. I’m glad to be able to contribute to FinlandWay®’s research-based foundation with this new article, especially with the context of Morocco, where we have been successfully supporting teachers for many years in our multiple FinlandWay® units.” shares Laura Ketonen.

Reimagining teacher education

The publisher, Routledge, describes the book as “essential for teachers, educators, researchers, policymakers, and institutional leaders”, empowering its readers to reimagine teacher education. Dr. Jonna Kangas, article co-author and one of the editors of the whole book, hopes  the book will contribute to building more inclusive, responsive, and research-informed education systems: Innovative Teacher Training is for those who believe teacher education should be a transformative process—empowering educators to lead with competence, compassion, and creativity in a rapidly evolving world.”

We look forward to sharing more insights about the article in 2026 when the book is published!
