Participatory pedagogy in Morocco: FinlandWay® research now published

This April 2026, FinlandWay® celebrated a significant addition to the research base behind our science-based educational programme. Dr. Jonna Kangas and her colleagues published a new book, An Innovative Teacher Training: Practical Frameworks for Future Education, through Routledge.

What makes this publication especially meaningful for us is one of its chapters: a peer-reviewed research article written by our own team. The authors are Laura Ketonen, Manager of Programme Design and Training at FinlandWay® HQ in Helsinki; Siham Shriri, FinlandWay® curriculum coordinator at our Al Amana FinlandWay® school in Tangier, Morocco; and Dr. Jonna Kangas, FinlandWay® Co-Founder.

The chapter, titled “Empowerment to participatory pedagogy – Fostering participatory pedagogy through an in-service training program in Moroccan ECE”, investigates the implementation of participatory pedagogy in Moroccan early childhood education (ECE) through our MAIKKA Teacher training programme. More specifically, we interviewed teachers from Al Amana FinlandWay® and used their interviews and coursework to gather evidence of the impact of our training model on teacher’s work with children. The study highlights the experiences of teachers and local coordinators with our MAIKKA in-service teacher training programme, which is grounded in Finnish ECE processes.

A book about reimagining teacher education

The publisher, Routledge, describes the book as “essential for teachers, educators, researchers, policymakers, and institutional leaders”, empowering its readers to reimagine teacher education. Dr. Jonna Kangas, who is also one of the editors of the book, hopes  the book will contribute to building more inclusive, responsive, and research-informed education systems: “Innovative Teacher Training is for those who believe teacher education should be a transformative process—empowering educators to lead with competence, compassion, and creativity in a rapidly evolving world.”
